I find it is impossible to have a reasoned and reasonable conversation with die-hard Trump supporters. So, I have avoided those conversations. But, today, I got an email from a former colleague that was indicative of just how far gone their arguments have gone. I felt compelled to respond. There is simply no way to debate points of view that have no grounding in fact. Below is the email exchange.
— EMAIL TO ME FROM FORMER COLLEAGUE
David,
I always liked you and enjoyed working with you and have liked some of your songs.
But I am very disappointed that you have become such a narrow-minded bigot over politics. What happened to the America where we could exchange ideas and have a different opinion?
You don’t have to listen to someone or believe them, but when you prohibit a person from speaking out you become like Nazi Germany and communist USSR. I have been shocked that people in the news business want to shut down debate and control thinking. Also, how can you and Hillary and others think if people don’t agree with you they are ignorant stupid people living in their parents’ basements.
I have literally hundreds of friends who loved Donald Trump and the more the left vilifies him the more they support him. How can you prefer a doddering old idiot who tells the people of Mauai who have just lost everything they have including their children and pets that he knows what they are going through because of a 20 minute fire in his kitchen (the fire department stated it was out by then), and that he could have lost his Corvette? Have you lost all feeling and sensitivity.
Friends of mine who are shocked over the decline of this country since Biden took over include former FBI agents, some of my friends from CNN, corporate executives, doctors, dentists, entrepreneurs who have done well, a former president of Women in Film who was a Hollywood director, my insurance agent, teachers I met the seven years I was a substitute, officers in the U.S. military who still remember the Afghanistan debacle (you can’t blame Trump because Biden had been President for nine months by then and as President, if he had a brain, he could have changed things. Nothing was set in stone.
My friends from my D.C. days who are from other countries and worked for embassies and are now American citizens are now big Trump supporters and can’t believe how we have declined since the Reagan days which were the golden years in their opinion. My hair dresser from Vietnam is shocked at the third world country America is becoming.
Even my gay friends, which I have had since I first moved to NYC after graduate school, and dozens of whom are in the dog world, are not pleased with the way things are going. I saw that Jennifer Anniston just said she thought the WOKE movement had gone too far.
So if you want a lawless society like California and the west coast states have become where you can smash windows and it is okay to steal, then you are in the right place. Target has lost about $4 billion in revenue because of these thefts and San Francisco is telling people who work at the federal office building where my father once worked to stay home to work because it is so dangerous in that area thanks to the drug addicts and homeless people on the streets.
Instead of bashing those of us who don’t want family members to die of a fentanyl overdose thanks to an open borders and who don’t want to get mugged in the grocery parking lot and who appreciate law and order instead of chaos and crime and murder, why don’t you spend your time and energy doing something constructive such as lobbying to get hospitals opened for the mentally ill so they can get treatment in a safe environment.
I loved Reagan, but thought he was making a huge mistake when he shut those down back in the 80’s. But why aren’t your Democrats when Pelosi was House Speaker and Biden President and Shumer heading the Senate opening them again. They could have done a lot with the billions they have sent the Ukraine to fight a war that is not ours. Since our government doesn’t believe in borders obviously since we don’t have one on the south, then why were they worried about Ukraine’s border?
Nothing this administration does makes sense. I always liked you, and am sorry to see that you must have sat in your black basement too long or inhaled the pot-filled air of the coffee houses to the point that your brain no longer recognizes the truth and reality and the hardship facing many Americans as housing interest rates are too high to buy one and gas and grocery prices are escalating to a point that makes life unaffordable.
In the meantime the people you are championing such as the Obamas (whom voted for the first time) and the Clintons and Bidens and all the other big Democrat leaders and supporters such as billionaires Soros and Bloomberg and Gates, etc. have multiple million-dollars houses in the Hamptons or Hollywood or on the beaches of Rhode Island or Cape Cod or wherever they live in high style. They are the haves and we are now the have-nots. I find it interesting you choose to support the FAT CATS and crooked politicians who are getting filthy rich from their corrupt ways. So glad they appreciate you and are sharing the wealth your direction.
I am disappointed in you and sorry you seem to have lost touch with reality.
— MY EMAIL IN RESPONSE
Dear Nancy,
I appreciate your honest and revealing email. I'm not sure what the "latest comment" is that you are responding to here, but let me clearly articulate my clear-eyed, fact-based understanding of 'reality.'
Donald Trump is a dishonest, corrupt, misogynistic, treasonous, arrogant, lying, cheating, conniving, petulant, disloyal, grifting, egotistical, insulting, childish, narcissistic, pompous, greedy, grifting, deceitful, perverse, bigoted, opportunistic, fraudulent, seditious, twice impeached and four times indicted, dictator-loving, autocratic, fear-mongering, anti-American con man and criminal. This is all plainly clear to any clear-thinking & reasoned human being.
The delusional cult members who worship Trump are clearly uninformed, misinformed, dis-informed or ill informed. They have bought the con and are easily manipulated by fear and falsehoods. They have abandoned all reason and have rejected all evidence. They are willfully ignorant of the truth.
The MAGA cult believes Trump's proven lies. They see Donald Trump as their charismatic leader, a man who doesn't offer solutions, but rather presents himself AS the solution. This is deluded and dangerous.
We are witnessing the beginning of American fascism under the flag of Trump and the insurrectionist cry of "Make America Great Again." MAGA is a disease. It must be excised from the body politic. It must be confronted and challenged in every forum. It must be eradicated before we lose our enlightened democracy to blind autocracy.
If you had any doubt of how I feel, I hope this has made it clear.
Hope you and yours are safe and well.
Kind regards.
David.
David , you hit the nail right on the head. The MAGA people are not just uninformed or misinformed but in my opinion seem to have had their brains scrambled. Brainwashed. Was Orwells 1984 a prophecy?
I also have friends and family that I can't have a reasonable dialogue with because they have drank the Trump koolaid. Dave I have been a registered Republican all my adult life ,I'm 79, and that party is gone and has been replaced by the Trump party which I will never support.
To me, all of this is indicative of how personal politics has become in this country with the demise of what used to be a sense of community, locally centered. We've so internalized what we process from the information sources we choose, that an attack, because that's how it perceived, whether on Trump or Biden (or how we identify based on our current culture) is a personal attack on us. It no longer matters that the vast majority of us have never met or had any kind of "real" relationship with the people or entities with with we now associate. It's intimately a part of us such that to concede any point is to admit we're terrible people. It's akin to having a dear relative accused of a monstrous crime and then having to defend them against the accusations. It's not going to be an academic discussion.
We don't argue politics anymore; these are personal statements of identity.
The bigger question is how we get out of this cycle.
