"Something to Lose" by David Guilbault
SONG DEMOS: This might be the best song I've ever written. At the very least, it is my most heartfelt. I've recorded three demos versions of it. And I still haven't found its soul.
I wrote this song, “Something to Lose,” circa 1971, some 54 years ago. I think it might be my best written song. At least, it is my most heartfelt. I have recorded demo versions of it three time. And I have yet to be satisfied with any of the recordings. I just haven’t found the song’s soul yet. But, I feel it.
*** VERSION ONE: This is me, solo, singing and playing my Taylor acoustic guitar. Recorded by Eric Herod. This is the song in its purest form.
** VERSION TWO: This is me singing, with an intentionally sparse baritone guitar arrangement and accompaniment, both by Jason Goessl.
VERSION THREE: This is Andy Zadrozny’s bass guitar arrangement with him playing bass and all other instruments and accompanying my vocals.
"SOMETHING TO LOSE" by David Guilbault "Something to Lose" © 1971 David Guilbault Feeling low. So close to down and out. Well I strain to shout. But no one hears my scream. Oh my Lord, I’m feeling blue. Living needs a reason. Won’t you please give me something to lose? Walking alone, down a one-way street To that dead-end sign That shouts my grief. Oh my Lord, well I’m feeling blue. Living needs a reason. Won’t you please give me something to lose? I need something I can hold on to When my spirit fails me. Well, my laughter’s gone. I can’t bring a smile. I can’t find the joy, and I don’t know, I don’t know why. All I know is I’m feeling blue. Living needs a reason. Won’t you please give me something to lose? Something to lose. You gotta help me Lord. I need something to lose. "Something to Lose" © 1971 David Guilbault _________________________
COVER ME: I invite any other singer-songwriters to find their own voice in this song, with their own arrangement.
Always interesting to make different takes on songs.
